Kansas brings back evolution as classroom standard

TOPEKA, Kan. ? Evolution was restored as a central theory in the
state's science classes Wednesday, ending 18 months of debate and
international ridicule over how Kansas teaches the origins of man.

The state Board of Education approved the new science standards in a
7-3 vote.

"I believe now that we have science standards that the rest of the
world could look to," board member Carol Rupe said.

The new standards will replace ones adopted in 1999 that omitted
references to many evolutionary concepts as well as the big-bang
theory of the creation of the universe.

Board member Steve Abrams, who voted against the new standards,
argued that evolution is a flawed theory but that he wasn't questioning
it because of religious doctrine.

Some religious fundamentalists and others object to the teaching of
evolution, saying it contradicts the biblical account of creation.

Kansas' 1999 standards deleted references to macroevolution ?
large-scale evolutionary changes that create new species ? but kept
references to "microevolution," or changes within species, and natural
selection, the idea that advantageous traits increase in a population over
time.

I encourage you to write the following to support the decision in
Kansas. The  opposition is flooding the mails, and we don't want their
high count to be used to argue against evolution in the future. 
Reportedly, some of the mail has  been quite nasty, which is obviously
bad for morale.

To quote one of the antievolution partisans (from the LA Times):

"If the scientific community thinks they can sit back and say, 'Phew,
we got that done,' that would be very presumptuous of them," said
John Bacon, a Board of Education member who opposed the new
standards. "Kids are not stupid. They're going to realize that what
they've learned at home [about their origins] is not what their science
teacher is trying to push on them. This issue is not going to go
away."

Also, Excite is hosting a Harris poll on Evolution versus Creationism.
Currently Evolution is winning 50% to 44%, with 5% unsure. Below is

scientific, but they are part of the psychological campaign.

 Public Favorable to Creationism

 2/14/01 -- The American public favors teaching creationism in schools
along with evolution (68% favor and 29% oppose), but is opposed to
the idea of teaching creationism instead of evolution, by a 55% to 40%
margin. Further,
 Gallup polls conducted last year suggest that a quarter of Americans
believe teaching creationism should be required of the public schools,
while another 56% say creationism should at least be offered to
students as a subject of study.
