차병원 차광렬 교수 등 기도효과 논문 스캔들   글쓴이 : kopsa     날짜 : 04-06-08 22:45     조회 : 7786     차병원 차광렬 교수 등 기도효과 논문 스캔들  2004년 5월 30일 영국 가디언의 옵서버에 2001년 강남 차병원 차광렬 교수 등이 발표한 기도 효과 논문과 관련하여 "기도의 힘 시험관내 수정 기적에 사기꾼의 역할이 드러나다"라는 기사가 실렸습니다(첨부 1). 논문의 저자 중 한 명이 사기 혐의로 기소되어 형의 선고를 기다리고 있는 것과 관련된 부정적인 제목입니다.  문제 저자의 역할 등 차 교수의 의견을 듣기 위해 차 병원에 전화를 한 바 차 교수는 국내에 없고, 이 연구를 알만 한 정형민 연구 부장도 마찬가지 라고 합니다. 이번 글은 차 교수 등 논문의 내용과 언론에 보도된 사기꾼 이라는 저자의 문제를 소개하고 무엇보다 이런 경우 실제 논문을 평가하는 방법에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해 작성합니다.    1. C.C. 불임센터와 기도 효과 논문 저자    컬럼비아 대학에 C.C. 불임 센터가 있는데 C.C.는 Cha Columbia입니다. 서울 차병원 불임 의학 센터의 연장으로, 주로 그 지역 한국인을 위한 것이 며, 소장은 차 교수이며, 센터의 진용에는 컬럼비아 의대 교수들도 참여하 고 있습니다. 차 교수도 컬럼비아 의대의 연구원 신분을 갖고 있습니다. 2001년 9월 발표된 논문은 다음과 같습니다(논문의 요약은 첨부 2,  컬럼 비아 의대 언론 보도문 부분은 첨부 3).  Kwang Y. Lobo)가 있고 두 번째 저자로 돼 있는 워스(Daniel P. Wirth, J.D., M.S.)가 이번 신문에 사기꾼이라고 오른 문제 인물인데 그의 소속이 어떻게 표기되었는지는 찾지 못했습니다. 아래 설명 하는 것과 같이 이 연구에 로보의 역할은 없고 서울 차병원과 차교수가 수 행한 것으로 보이는데, 워스의 역할이 궁금합니다. 이 연구가 차병원의 연 구비로 수행한 것이라고 나와 있습니다.  이 논문과 관련하여 2001년 12월 미 보건부(Department of Health & Human Service)에서 윤리 규정을 준수했는지 조사한 문건을 인터넷에서 발견했습니다. 그곳에는 로보가 이 연구에 대해 컬럼비아 대학의 관련 윤 리 위원회(Institutional Review Board, IRB)에 보고하지 않은 문제 지적이 있습니다. 그리고 로보는 저자로 이름이 들어가 있지만 실제 연구가 완결 된지 6-12 개월 뒤에 이 연구에 대해 차 교수로부터 듣고 논문 작성과 발 표 등을 도와 주었을 뿐이라고 했습니다. 또한 보건부의 조사 문건에는 이 연구가 컬럼비아 대학 보건 과학에 속한 연구자가 시작한 것이 아니며, 서울의 차 병원 IRB에서 승인한 것이며, 환 자도 차 병원 환자이며, 미 연방 정부의 연구비가 들어간 것이 아니기 때 문에 컬럼비아 대학의 IRB에서 로보의 산부인과에 대해 교육을 실시하는 것으로 문제를 종결하겠다는 내용이 있습니다. 미 보건부의 이러한 조사는 최근 황우석 교수의 인간 배아 복제 줄기세포 연구와 관련된 윤리 문제의 성격을 이해하는데 도움이 됩니다.    2. 논문의 요지 차 교수 등의 논문은 제3자의 기도 효과, 즉 intercessory prayer (IP) 효과 논문입니다. 시험관내 수정-배아 전달(in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer, IVF-ET)에 기도가 임신의 성공에 미치는 영향을 지표로 하였습 니다. 실험은 철저한 이중 맹시험으로 하였습니다. 결과가 분석될 때까지 아무도 어떤 대상이 기도를 받았는지 모르는 상태로 하였다고 합니다.  IVF-ET는 서울 차병원에서, 기도는 미국. 캐나다. 오스트레일리아에서, 그 리고 연구자들은 미국의 제3 의료 센터에 있다고 했습니다. IVF-ET에 대 해 잘 모르지만 일단 여성의 난자를 채취하여 시험관 내에서 정자와 수정 시켜 수정란을 배아 단계에서 여성의 자궁에 착상시켜 배아가 계속 분화하 여 태아로 발육하면 임신이 성공했다고 볼 것입니다. 이때 대상은 26세에서 46세 사이의 219명인데, 기도 군을 위한 기도는 3가지 그룹으로 나누어 했는데 제1 그룹에서 기도 군 여성의 사진을 들고 임신 성공을 기원하는 기도를 했습니다. 그리고 제2의 그룹은 제1 그룹을 위해, 그러니까 제1 그룹의 기도가 효과를 나타내기를 기도했고, 제3의 그룹은 제1 그룹과 제2 그룹을 위해 기도했다고 합니다. 이들은 처음 난자 발육을 위해 호르몬 처치를 할 때부터 시작하여 3주간 계속 기도를 했다고 합니다. 난자 채취가 어렵다고 하는데 이 과정부터 기도를 한 것 같습니다. 원 논문에는 연령별 분석 등 결과가 복잡하게 보이는데 간단히 말하면 기 도 군과 기도를 받지 않은 군의 임신 성공률은 50% 대 26%, 착상률은  16.3% 대 8%입니다. 물론 통계적으로 유의적이지만 아직 예비 자료로 해 석해야 할 것이라고 했습니다. 3. 워스와 워스의 범죄 행위 이번 문제는 연구자 중 하나인 워스(Daniel P. Wirth, J.D., M.S.)에 관한 것입니다. 우선 워스는 J.D. (Juris Doctor) 인데 이 학위는 법학 전문 대학 원(law school) 학위입니다. 그리고 그는 캘리포니아의 존 F. 케네디 대학에서 초심리학 석사 학위를 받았다고 합니다. 워스의 학부 전공이 무엇인지는 알지 못합니다. (04/06/10 문구 수정했습니다)   이 초심리학 과정에서 그가 만난 사람이 호바스((Joseph Horvath)인데 두 사람은 초정상 현상을 증명하는 많은 논문을 함께 내었다고 합니다. 워스 를 인터넷을 찾으니 치료 안수 등 논문이 보입니다. 워스는 소속을 Healing Sciences Research International로 하고 있는데 그가 소장입니다. 워스의 문제는 아델피아 통신(Adelphia Communications) 창업자의 사기 혐의를 조사하는 과정에서 불거져 나온 것 같습니다. 이 회사의 직원인 트 루러브(John Wayne Truelove)가 2001년 9월에서 2002년 3월 사이 12차례 에 걸쳐 상담비 명목으로 워스(Daniel Wirth)에게 210만 달러를 허위로 송 금했다는 것입니다. FBI에서 이를 조사하는 과정에서 트루러브가 호바스 (Joseph Horvath)라는 것이 밝혀지고 워스와 호바스가 가짜 이름으로 여러 범죄 행위에 관련된 것으로 드러났다고 합니다.   워스는 1980년대 중반 여권을 내는데 그리고 아파트를 빌리는데 1959년 유 아 때 사망한 아이의 이름인 트루러브(John Wayne Truelove)를 사용했고 뉴욕에 주소를 설정하고 사회 보장 혜택을 얻는데 1998년에 사망한 또 다 른 사람의 이름인 워스(Rudy Wirth)를 사용했다고 합니다. 호바스도 1957 년에 코네티컷에서 사망한 아이의 이름인 헤슬러 등 여러 이름을 위조로 사용하였는데 1990년 사기죄로 감옥에 갔을 때는 헤슬러였고 2002년 보험 금을 타기 위해 자신의 방갈로에 불을 질러 체포되었을 때의 이름은 워스 가 사용한 것과 같은 이름인 트루러브였다고 합니다.   두 사람은 2004년 5월 18일 기소되어 형의 선고를 남겨 두고 있습니다. 두 사람의 추정 형량은 5년형과 25만 달러까지의 벌금형이라고 합니다. 그리 크지 않아 보입니다. 워스 측으로는 정상적인 상담비로 돈을 받았다고 주 장할 것이며, 가짜 이름을 사용한 것이 사실이라면 그 범죄 행위의 심각성 에 따라 처벌을 받을 것입니다. 4. 연구 평가와 워스의 문제 스켑틱스는 이제까지 초정상 현상에 대한 많은 실험이 있었지만 아직 초정 상 현상의 존재를 입증하는 증거가 없다는 입장입니다. 이런 저런 실험상 결함이 있기 때문입니다. 이 실험의 경우 어떻게 보아야 할 것인지? 스켑 틱스의 비판적 사고란 증거가 사실인지, 추리에 오류가 없는지가 전부입니 다. 이런 저런 연구자의 한계, 즉 학위나 능력이나 기타 불완전성을 말하는 것 자체가 추리 오류에 속하며 그것을 반영하여 실험을 평가할 수는 없다 고 생각합니다. 다시 말해서 원칙적으로 실험의 평가는 그 실험자체로 내려야 할 것임을 말하는 것입니다. 그런 면에서 이번 기도효과 연구도 실험 자체에 문제가 있는지를 면밀하게 확인해야 할 것이며, 문제가 없다면 아직 예비 결과라 고 했지만 재현성을 만족할 때까지 확정적으로 제3자의 기도 효과가 있다 고 단정해서는 안 된다고 말할 수 있을 것입니다. 논문이 발표된 잡지의 경우 이 논문은 심사를 통과한 것입니다. 일단 확인 절차를 거쳤습니다. 때문에 스켑틱 반경의 이 논문을 철회하라는 주장을 들을 리가 없습니다. 컬럼비아 대학의 경우 이 논문의 발표를 언론 보도문 으로 낼 정도로 비중을 두었습니다. 이번 사기 사건이 터지고 언론에서 논 문과 관련하여 다루자 일단 언론 보도문을 거두었다고 하지만 금번 문제에 대한 공식적인 견해를 밝히지 않고 있다고 합니다.    5. 연구를 확인할 필요성 이번 기도 효과 연구의 경우 언론 보도대로라면 워스는 사기꾼으로 드러났 습니다. 그리고 그와 공동으로 많은 초정상 현상에 관한 연구 논문을 만들 어 낸 호바스의 범죄 행위는 더욱 심각합니다. 이런 경우 어떻게 해야 할 것인지, 차교수나 컬럼비아 대학은 논문의 완전성을 말하기 위해서라도 조처를 취해야 할 것이라고 생각합니다. 일단은 기도 효과 연구에서 워스의 역할을 확인할 필요가 있습니다. 예를 들어 그가 기도 군의 설정과 그 실험에 관여했다면 관련 자료를 확인해야 하며 그가 결과 분석에 이용한 자료를 다룰 기회가 있었다면 그 자료를 다 시 확인해야 할 것입니다. 이런 확인에 의해 워스의 역할에 문제가 없었다 고 한다면 이 논문은 그대로 유효할 것이며 그렇지 않다면 당연히 논문을 철회해야 할 것입니다.    이번 글은 스켑틱스의 비판에 흔히 보이는 대인 논증의 문제를 염두에 두 고 작성했습니다. 계속 차 병원의 차 교수 등과 접촉을 시도하여 이들의 의견을 듣고 또한 이곳에 게시한 방향대로 확인하여 결과를 알려줄 것을 요구하려고 합니다.  .................................................. *첨부 1 Exposed: Conman’s Role in Prayer-power IVF ‘Miracle’ One of the authors of a university report on infertility has admitted a multi-million-dollar fraud, reports Paul Harris in New York Sunday May 30, 2004  The Observer Guardian Unlimited ⓒ Guardian Newspapers Limited 2004 It was a miracle that created headlines around the world. Doctors at one of the world’s top medical schools claimed to have scientifically proved the power of prayer. Many Americans took the Columbia University research announced in October 2001 after the terror attacks on New York and Washington as a sign from God. It seemed to prove that praying helped infertile women to conceive. But The Observer can reveal a story of fraud and cover-up behind the research. One of the study’s authors is a conman obsessed with the paranormal who has admitted to a multi-million-dollar scam. Daniel Wirth, now under house arrest in California awaiting sentencing, has used a series of false identities for several decades, including that of a dead child. Wirth is at the centre of a network of bizarre scientific research, often working with co-researcher Joseph Horvath. Horvath has pleaded guilty to fraud, has used a series of false names and is accused of burning down his house for insurance money. Many scientists are now questioning how someone with Wirth’s background was able to persuade Columbia University Medical Centre to unveil his research in such a high-profile way. They also want to know why it appeared in the respected Journal of Reproductive Medicine, whose vetting procedures are usually strict. ‘We are concerned this study could be totally fraudulent. It is an amazing sag a,’ said Dr Bruce Flamm, a clinical professor at the University of California. The study claimed to show that a woman’s chances of conceiving through IVF treatment doubled when someone prayed for them. ‘IVF is a very difficult procedure. Increasing the success rate by 100 per cent would be a huge breakthrough, a revolution,’ said Flamm. The study was based on an IVF programme in Korea. Prayer groups in the United States, Canada and Australia were shown anonymous pictures of women on the programme and asked to pray. The subjects were not told they were part of a study, but the results claimed to show that the group had double the success rate of a group not being prayed for. The research listed three authors of the study: Daniel Wirth and two Columbia fertility specialists, Dr Kwang Cha and Dr Rogerio Lobo. Kwang Cha has since left Columbia and now helps to run fertility clinics in Los Angeles and Korea. Lobo is still at Columbia. Neither returned phone calls and emails requesting an interview. Wirth’s lawyer, William Arbuckle, also failed to return The Observer’s calls. On 18 May, Wirth pleaded guilty to multi-million-dollar fraud charges against US cable telecommunications company Adelphia Communications. While working for Adelphia, Horvath had steered $2.1 million of contracts to Wirth. The pair now face up to five years in jail and up to $250,000 in fines. FBI papers filed during the case also show that Wirth has used a series of false identities over the years. In the mid-1980s, Wirth used the name of John Wayne Truelove to obtain a passport and rent apartments in California. The real Truelove was a New York child who had died as an infant in 1959. He also used the name of Rudy Wirth, who died in 1998, to establish an address in New York and claim social security benefits. It is not clear whether Wirth and Rudy Wirth were related. It has emerged that Wirth has no medical qualifications. He graduated with a law degree and then took a master’s in parapsychology at John F. Kennedy University in California, where he met Horvath. Wirth and Horvath have co-authored numerous pieces of research claiming to prove paranormal activities. Many of them are linked to a body called Healing Sciences Research International, which Wirth heads. However, the institute appears to be only a mail box with no telephone number. Horvath also has a long criminal history and has used many fake identities, including Joseph Hessler, a child who died in Connecticut in 1957. It was as Hessler that he was jailed for fraud in 1990. But it was as John Truelove - using the same false identity as Wirth - that he was arrested in 2002 for burning down his own bungalow in order to claim the insurance. Horvath has also pleaded guilty to practising medicine without a licence after posing as a doctor in California. Sceptical scientists liken the two to a pair of conmen, similar to the character played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the film Catch Me If You Can. ‘They seemed to think they were cleverer than everyone else. It was maybe the love of the game that spurred them on,’ said Professor Dale Beyerstein of the University of British Columbia, who has been investigating the pair’s research for several years. Columbia University would not comment on the Wirth case. However, shortly after the prayer and fertility study was published, the Department of Health began an investigation into the university’s research. It found numerous ethical problems. Lobo, a respected scientist who was named initially as the lead author of the research, had only provided ‘editorial review and assistance with publication’ on the study. Scientists are pressing Columbia and the Journal of Reproductive Medicine to disown the research. But the JRM still has the study on its website. Phone calls to the journal were not returned. Columbia removed the press release announcing the study from its online archive shortly after receiving requests from scientists for comment after the Wirth fraud charges. But the university has not officially commented, ignoring clarification requests from the Commission for Scientific Medicine and Mental Health. .................................................. *첨부 2 Kwang Y. Study Design: Prospective, double-blind, randomized clinical trial in which patients and providers were not informed about the intervention. Statisticians and investigators were masked until all the data had been collected and clinical outcomes were known. The setting was an IVF-ET program at Cha Hospital, Seoul, Korea. IP was carried out by prayer groups in the United States, Canada and Australia. The investigators were at a tertiary medical center in the United States. The patients were 219 women aged 26-46 years who were consecutively treated with IVF-ET over a four-month period. Randomization was performed after stratification of variables in two groups: distant IP vs. no IP. The clinical pregnancy rates in the two groups were the main outcome measure. Results: After clinical pregnancies were known, the data were unmasked to assess the effects of IP after assessment of multiple comparisons in a log-linear model. The IP group had a higher pregnancy rate as compared to the no-IP rate (50% vs. 26%, P=.0013). The IP group showed a higher implantation rate (16.3% vs. 8%, P=.0005). Observed effects were independent of clinical or laboratory providers and clinical variables. Conclusion: A statistically significant difference was observed for the effect of IP on the outcome of IVF-ET, though the data should be interpreted as preliminary. The controversial findings, published in the September issue of the Journal of Reproductive Medicine, reveal that a group of women who had people praying for them had a 50 percent pregnancy rate compared to a 26 percent rate in the group of women who did not have people praying for them. None of the women undergoing the IVF procedures knew about the praying. The researchers acknowledge the results seem incredible and say unknown biological factors may be playing a role in the difference between the two groups. But they decided to go public with the results in the hope that other scientists may carry out studies to determine if the findings are reproducible and, if so, what factors might be responsible for the improved success rate in the group of women who had people praying for them. "We could have ignored the findings, but that would not help to advance the field," says Dr. Rogerio Lobo, chairman of obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and lead author of the study. "We are putting the results out there hoping to provoke discussion and see if anything can be learned from it. We would like to understand the biological or other phenomena that led to this almost doubling of the pregnancy rate." The study, which had several safeguards in place to eliminate bias, involved 199 women planning in vitro fertilization and embryo transfers at the Cha Hospital in Seoul, Korea, between December 1998 and March 1999. A statistician randomly assigned the prospective mothers to either a prayer group (100 women) or a non-prayer group (99). Besides the women, the physicians and medical personnel caring for the women did not know a study of prayer was ongoing. The people praying for the women lived in the United States, Canada, and Australia and were incapable of knowing or contacting the women undergoing the procedures. Which women were in which group was not revealed until the pregnancy data became available at the completion of the study. The people praying were from Christian denominations and were separated into three groups. One group received pictures of the women and prayed for an increase in their pregnancy rate. Another group prayed to improve the effectiveness of the first group. A third group prayed for the two other groups. Anecdotal evidence from other prayer research has found this method to be most effective. The three groups began to pray within five days of the initial hormone treatment that stimulates egg development and continued to pray for three weeks. Besides finding a higher pregnancy rate among the women who had a group praying for them, the researchers found older women seemed to benefit more from prayer. For women between 30 and 39, the pregnancy rate for the prayer group was 51 percent, compared with 23 percent for the non-prayer group. The researchers analyzed their data several ways to see if they could find other variables that would have accounted for the differences between the two groups. However, no adjustments altered the results. The group will continue to study whether its findings are genuine and, if so, what mechanisms might be at work. Other studies have shown that prayer seems to exert a benefit for heart patients. The researchers believe theirs is the first study looking at prayer and infertility. ### None of the researchers are employed by religious organizations and were not asked by religious groups to perform the study.
